The nine-foot Goliath was a trash-talker. He had a reputation to gibe his mouth, only it didn't gibe God's reputation.
Trash-talk is used today to distract opponents inwards sports, gaming, too street fights, only Goliath used it to frighten the entire Israeli Army.
